By Allen Smallingon Dec 2. What a treat it is for the North American market to have the second Gengoroh Tagame book published legally in English! It was printed in Italy in quality paperback format and published by German gay erotic specialist Bruno Gmuender in December of 2. ENDLESS GAME is a good straightforward example of Tagame's work, although a bit light considering the artist's specialization in BDSM themes. The plot takes us into dom/sub mentorship, penetration, ejaculation, gay group sex, even male prostitution - - elements of pain, humiliation and confinement are there, but not to so great an extent. This makes ENDLESS GAME a good starter volume for gay men and others new to the master.
Otherwise, I'd recommend going for The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame: Master of Gay Erotic Manga, more of an anthology of Tagame themes and treatments. It might also be easier to find since ENDLESS GAME is bound to be in short supply, for a while at least.
EDITED TO ADD: ENDLESS GAME is presented in manga format. Compared to a Western graphic novel, it is read back to front, and the individual panels right to left rather than left to right, also known as "Japanese R- L." In the event right- hand columns descend opposite multiple left- hand rows, adopt a clockwise swirling scan. You'll catch on quickly, and if you already know yaoi you're home free already.

An instant classic from the master. By Jlawon Dec 3. 1, 2. With the publication of The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame and now Endless Game, english- language readers are finally able to hold in their hand(s) the incomparable work of Gengoroh Tagame. Unlike The Passion, Endless Game contains a single story, focusing on a young man's seduction into a world of sex show performances and prostitution. While there are certainly elements of coercion and humiliation, this is very different from Tagame's usual extreme BDSM work. There are no ropes, gags or torture. And in fact, as he states in the included notes on the story, the consensual nature of the sex represents food for thought in considering deeper themes.
Of course the book is enjoyable on less cerebral levels as well. While it might not have the intensity - - often brutal and horrific as it was - - of many of the oneshots in Passion, the sex scenes are prolific, imaginative and explicit. There is a gallery of compelling characters, drawn and brought to life with Tagame's vivid visual style, and filled out with well- translated and sometimes humorous dialog.
And as a bonus, two lush color artworks - - more in keeping with Tagame's usual BDSM style - - are included as surprises on the inner covers. English- language readers are particularly privileged to have access to this book; as Tagame writes on his blog, the work is so recent that it has not yet been compiled and released as a book even in Japan. He has added extra pages, and most exciting, its European publication has allowed its beautiful art to avoid the mutilation by censorship that manga in Japan is subject to these days. A third english- language publication, Gunji, is planned for a 2.
Very well done and hot erotic comics! By Mark Douglason Jan 2.
I've seen Tagame's work before, but much of it has been way too extreme for my taste, even repulsive. With this book he takes out all of the S & M elements that were common in his work previously, and this makes the book much more accessible for the average reader. The drawings here are very well done, the storyline is fun and playful, and the sex depicted is hot. I enjoyed this book very much and I give it a high recommendation. Honestly- -diappointed. By Christopheron Sep 2.
I was really looking forward to Endless Game. I like erotic comics, I like manga, and I've read such high praise for Gengoroh Tagame here on Amazon.
But I find the work, or at least this work, really subpar. The storyline is pretty bland, not innovative, not satirical, not even particularly tied into Japanese culture to any extent that I can see (granted, as a Westerner, I may be hugely missing the boat there). The art is perfunctory. The bodies are well sculpted and very explicit- -all to the good!- -but none of the bodies express more than the most rudimentary personality or individuality.
And very little attention, or rather none, is given to detail in any other part of the frame. You might think the characters live in an Ikea warehouse universe, because all the locations have the same sterile, anonymous, impersonal look, like an unrented apartment. I realize that many people will say, "I didn't buy this book for interior decoration tips, I bought it for hot sex," but creating hot sex in an erotic comic, to me, relies on creating an entire erotic world, one in which all the details contribute to the finished product. This looks like Tagame was so obsessed with drawing hot men in hot poses, he didn't consider what sort of world these men might inhabit and how that might help to strengthen his erotic hold on the audience.
The obvious comparison to make is with Tom of Finland, or Etienne. They create whole worlds in their panals, the signage, the background figures, the locations all combining to create a specific imagined place, images soaked with atmosphere that reinforce the hot sex of the foreground.
And to me that's what distinguishes serviceable pornography from erotic art. I'm honestly surprised Tagame has the reputation he does. Five Stars. By Don Stayneron Jul 0.
Incredibly hot and sexy. Well drawn. Four Stars. By Joson Jun 2. 8, 2. Enjoyed it very much.
I feel as if I had seen this movie before? A new classic. By M. Leblancon May 0. 8, 2. Great story and hot, erotic artwork. Looking forward to more translations of his work, will get all that come out Tagame. By Richon Jan 2. 2, 2.
I have always loved tagame and to finally have English versions to his amazing stories and drawings is absolutely awesome. HOLY GENGOROHBy Rhubarb Joneson Sep 0. A Japanese art form. By Grady Harpon Dec 2. According to Wikipedia, `Manga are comics created in Japan, or by Japanese creators in the Japanese language, conforming to a style developed in Japan in the late 1. They have a long and complex pre- history in earlier Japanese art.
In Japan, people of all ages read manga. The medium includes works in a broad range of genres: action- adventure, romance, sports and games, historical drama, comedy, science fiction and fantasy, mystery, suspense, detective, horror, sexuality, and business/commerce, among others. In Japan, manga are usually serialized in large manga magazines, often containing many stories, each presented in a single episode to be continued in the next issue. The term manga is a Japanese word referring both to comics and cartooning. Manga" as a term used outside Japan refers specifically to comics originally published in Japan.'. Gengoroh Tagame is one of the brightest stars of manga. Here we have translated into English a full volume of his work.
To quote the artist, `There were a few things on my mind when I wrote Endless Game. I write in a distinctly hardcore BDSM style, but with Endl. Ess Gam. E I deliberately kept the BDSM tropes contained. Even while the plot included plenty of hardcore sex and rough play, there are no real elements of sadomasochism or bondage/dominance. What's more, all the depicted actions have been assented to, even advanced, by the main character, Akira, himself.
The story is what I imagine to be a plot driven by maximal iterations of "gay pornographic intercourse." Readers who don't have BDSM fantasies can take pleasure in the story, but the erotic elements are still sufficiently hardcore. At least that's what I was aiming for. I was also very cognizant of instilling a kind of critical element in the depictions of sex.
Akira has a voracious appetite for sex and is in perpetual pursuit of attaining personal ecstasy in this story. He's a youth who believes this pursuit suffices as the entirety of his existence.
As a result of that pursuit, he leaves his life to the charge of another person and begins his descent to a status as a "marionette prostitute." As a parable, it's structured as a "tragedy," with the "fall" of the main character, but Akira himself doesn't think of this at all as a "tragedy." In fact he considers himself "lucky" and is incredibly "happy." This dichotomy is, in other words, the critical element I'd scoped out. So, as to avoid misunderstanding, I did not write this suggesting Akira was some naive young man unaware of the trap he was caught in. I don't hand down judgments through my story, whatever the variety. Whatever one will think of when reading this is entirely subjective to each reader, and as its author I don't have a correct interpretation. There is none.'. With that background it is much easier to approach Gengorah Tagame's work. It is a style and a genre that is different but at the same time it offers a look into Japanese visual and written culture that is most interesting!
